The household gathers together. If you have a candle, light a candle to signify God’s presence. Ask the Holy Spirit to join you during this time of prayer.

Our help is in the name of the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.

HYMN – „Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty“ by Reginald Heber (1826)
(sing along with a YouTube version of the hymn –

1. Holy, holy, holy!
Lord God Almighty
Early in the morning
Our song shall rise to Thee
Holy, holy, holy!
Merciful and mighty
God in three persons
Blessed Trinity!

2. Holy, holy, holy!
All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns
around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim
falling down before thee,
which wert, and art,
and evermore shalt be.

3. Holy, holy, holy!
Though the darkness hide thee
Though the eye of sinful man
Thy glory may not see
Only Thou art holy
There is none beside Thee
Perfect in power, in love and purity

4. Holy, holy, holy!
Lord God Almighty
Oh thy works shall praise Thy name
In earth and sky and sea
Holy, holy, holy!
Merciful and mighty
God in three persons
Blessed Trinity!

O blessed Trinity, in whom we know the maker of all things seen and unseen, the Savior of all both near and far: By your Spirit enable us so to worship your divine majesty that with all the company of heaven we may magnify your glorious name, saying, Holy, holy, holy. Glory to you, O Lord Most High. Amen.

Moment for silent reflection

MATTHEW 28:16-20

SERMON by Professor Rolf Jacobson from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN, USA

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy universal church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, we adore you for your threeness and oneness, a holy mystery. We are in awe of that same unfathomable mystery reflected in the creation around us, the complexity of an atom, the birth of a child, and your work in our lives. Your ways are higher than our ways, your thoughts greater than our thoughts, so although we acknowledge that we do not always understand your ways, we continue to offer you our prayers.

Today, we pray

  • for the world as it seeks to respond and end the effects of the COVID-19 coronavirus that God guide us in our actions.
  • for those infected by the COVID-19 coronavirus that God heal their bodies.
  • for medical professionals and hospital workers who care for COVID-19 patients that God protect them from the virus.
  • for all the leaders of the world that God grant them wisdom, prudence, and foresight to make good decisions;
  • for all those affected by racism that God spur us to action to rid ourselves and the world of this evil sin.
  • for those who are hungry and unable to receive enough food that through Christ we alleviate suffering.

We also pray (add personal joys and concerns)…..

Gathering the prayers of our lips and the prayers of our hearts, we pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.

May God, the Holy Trinity,
make you strong in faith and love,
defend you on every side,
and guide you in truth and peace;
and the blessing of God Almighty,
the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
